The German Society for Mission Studies (DGMW) was founded 1918 in Berlin by a small circle of experts on initiative of Carl Mirbt, Professor of Church History in Göttingen. It was the first society of it's kind. The DGMW supported mission studies at the public Universities and published two study series.

After 1945 the DGMW extended their activity by granting scholarships, publications, events and congresses. In 1972 the Society was decisivly taken part in the founding of the International Association for Mission Studies (IAMS).
